Apollo of the Roses
A plaster bust of Apollo turns away from the light, its shoulder wrapped in drapery that catches a wash of warm pink against the cool green of the tabletop. At its base a single orange rose lies open, the one note of saturated colour in an otherwise hushed palette of greys and muted greens. The handling is deliberately restrained: soft edges throughout the background let the modelled form of the sculpture carry the picture, while the flower is painted wet into wet with a looser, brighter touch. A still life built on the contrast between the permanence of carved stone and the brief life of a cut bloom.
