A farmyard cockerel strides across bare ground in full profile, comb scarlet against a wall of muted ochre and grey. The bird carries the picture on its plumage: cream hackles spilling over a burnished copper breast, the tail a fall of blue black feathers painted wet into wet so the sheen reads as light rather than colour. At his feet three chicks scatter around a weathered stone block, small warm notes that set the scale and give the composition its second, quieter rhythm. Painted in 2019, it is a study in bearing as much as in anatomy, a barnyard subject handled with the seriousness usually reserved for a sitter.
