Tiepolo, and the Courage of the Sketch

Listen to the podcast

Giovanni Battista Tiepolo (Venice, 1696 to 1770) covered some of the largest ceilings in Europe: Würzburg, the Palazzo Labia, the Gesuati in Venice, with figures that seem to have arrived on the plaster already alive. What I keep returning to, though, isn't the great frescoes. It's the small things that came before them: the oil sketches, the modelli and bozzetti he made to work a composition out.

They are fast. A whole ceiling's worth of saints and sky resolved at the size of a drawing, in an afternoon, with a loaded brush and no time to fuss. And here is the strange part: the sketches are often more alive than the finished frescoes. The speed is not a limitation he put up with. It is where the life is.

That is the lesson I take from him, and it is the whole case for working quickly. Tiepolo could draw anything, which left him free to stop drawing, to let one confident stroke stand for an arm, a turned head, a fall of drapery, and trust the eye to finish it. He chose the essence of a gesture over its anatomy, not because the anatomy was beyond him but because the gesture was the truer thing. A quick study forces that same choice on the rest of us before we've earned it, which is exactly why it teaches so fast.

When I set a timer and block in a figure in twenty minutes, I'm not imitating his facility; that took him a lifetime. I'm borrowing his priorities. Find the movement first. Load the brush. Put it down once and mean it. Let the unfinished passage breathe.

The bravura that can look like carelessness in a Tiepolo is the opposite of careless: it is everything inessential already decided against. Speed, in his hands, was never haste. It was confidence made visible, and confidence is the thing a quick study is really practice for.
